W.L. Gore & Associates Retail Environment

Newark, Delaware

W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc. is a global manufacturing company specializing in products derived from fluoropolymers. Although best known as the developer of waterproof, breathable GORE-TEX fabrics, Gore's products are also used in a variety of industrial and consumer products, diverse industrial applications, and medical implants. In 2010, the enterprise created a retail environment at its Barksdale site, a former electronics assembly plant that also serves as home to Gore's Capabilities Center.

With an open pavilion plan anchored in one corner by a full height 15 x 15 feet mirror, the store is characterized by clean sightlines and the use of recycled and natural materials throughout. A suite of custom blackened steel fixtures provides a flexible backdrop for customized seasonal displays. Additional opportunities to engage deeper with the brand are provided via lavastone clad support spaces including an entry threshold, interactive bar, and product demonstration area.

W.L. Gore Store entry threshold and signage

The lavastone clad entry threshold sets the tone for the experience.

Steel signage and edge lit, carved glass panels are inset into the lavastone walls with blackened steel channels.

A standard storefront glazing system holds a full height one-way mirror in place. The mirror serves as a spatial anchor while also providing a palette for seamlessly integrated digital media.

A fabric banner showcasing NSIDC satellite imagery acts as backdrop for the point of sales counter. The Gore brand colors are integrated into the experience through the store's material palette; some examples include the blue recycled glass counter top and a red cork lined corridor leading to the fitting room.

Two black locust trees are a reflection of Gore's culture and represent an informal tribute to the company's founders.

The blackened steel fixtures utilize mirrored surfaces to provide full product views. The removable glass and steel risers securely rest on inset perimeter channels.
